“Compassionate Action Accompanied by Wisdom”

Many people are asking what Karuna Reiki® is. Quite some time ago I wrote this article about it and now feel it might interest members and readers of the Vermont Reiki Association’s website. In the past two years many Reiki practitioners have taken classes and been attuned to this wonderful energy.

Karuna Reiki® is a system of healing that has evolved out of the Usui Reiki System. The combination of the energetic essence of Karuna and Reiki, which is spiritually guided life force energy, births a new, deep powerful form for our world today. When I first heard about Karuna Reiki® I had been a traditional Usui practitioner and teacher for several years. I wondered how the Creator’s gift of Reiki through Dr. Mikao Usui could be improved upon. My curiosity found me enrolling in a class for practitioners. In that class I learned that Karuna is a Sanscrit word and is translated to mean ”an action to lessen the suffering of mankind”. It also is translated as “compassionate action”. Ancient literature states that “karuna” must be accompanied by wisdom to be effective. Compassion (karuna) is a compelling force for all who are enlightened beings, in physical or spiritual form. Some of the Ascended Masters who have been intuitively known to assist during a session are Kuan Yin, Jesus, Mother Mary, St. Germain, the Archangels, Buddha and many others.

The Karuna Reiki® system of Reiki was developed by Reiki Master William Lee Rand and other healers at the International Center for Reiki Training in Southfield, MI. Some of the healers who assisted in this birthing were Reiki Masters Marcy Miller, Kellie-Ray Marine, Catherine Mills-Belamount, Maria Abraham, and Pat Courney. The origin of this system began when these masters started receiving symbols from the Universal Energy as they worked with Reiki.

In l995 this group was guided to put all information together and name the modality Karuna Reiki®, or Reiki of Compassion. The new symbols work basically as the Usui Reiki symbols yet have different individual “duties” and have proven to work on a deep subatomic cellular level. In the first two levels of Karuna Reiki® training, the student learns how to “draw” and activate these symbols. These symbols assist the practitioner with personal problems and world situations to bring more advanced healing energy.

As I have practiced using these Karuna Reiki® symbols I have found them helpful in the following areas: aligning with the higher self, grounding, manifesting, healing past life issues, healing of relationships and co-dependency issues, removal of deep seated fears, healing of addictive behaviors, healing of allergies, and increase in learning abilities. All of the symbols work on a deep level. Many are useful in creating harmony and for sending healing energies to planetary issues and in bringing in deeper levels of knowledge and wisdom required for the healing of humanity.

I am always impressed with the results of the work of “healing the Shadow Self” which is experienced in these classes. It is sometimes difficult for us to understand that within the subconscious mind there are many “sub personalities” causing a conflict of feelings and agendas. (Described in The Book of Karuna Reiki® by Laurelle Shanti Gaia.) They seem to be disconnected from our conscious self. To quote from the curriculum: “If we are to heal ourselves from creating unwanted experiences, then we must be willing to deal with the unconscious parts of our mind and heal them.” How many of us find ourselves being annoyed by addictive habits and/or disabled in some way by them? These patterns can be cleared away and replaced by healthy desired thought forms thru consistent work with the Karuna Reiki® energy and symbols.

As I work with myself and with clients using Karuna Reiki® energy and symbols I often see release from old patterns and roots of unforgiveness. I marvel at the flood of Divine Love and Light that follows this release.

Karuna Reiki® is helpful in “generational healing”. Many of our issues to be healed are actually genetically coded into our consciousness and even into our DNA from our ancestors. This process includes the energy of both Usui and Karuna Reiki® symbols.

As in many alternative healing methods, Karuna Reiki® is especially a helpful assistance with allopathic healing methods, being complementary. It has been found to facilitate the positive effects of chemotherapy. It seems to neutralize toxicity and helps with side effects. Karuna Reiki® is also a great assistance in any medical emergency, relieving pain and/or bleeding, because it works on the cellular levels. There is a helpful Karuna Reiki® technique for relieving allergy symptoms and also anxiety attacks.

Ancient Sacred Sound Vibrational healing has gradually found its way back into holistic healing work. One of the first healing tools ever given by Creator to mankind is the voice. It has been found that toning and chanting during a Karuna Reiki® session creates intense shifts in the frequency of the healing energy. In Karuna Reiki® one may choose the correct symbols to bring in the necessary energies and then chant the names softly as the energies guide themselves to do the necessary healing work. Toning also helps magnify the energies as one facilitates the session.

It has been found that combining the Usui Reiki with the Karuna Reiki® symbols can bring a deeper result for such issues as inner child work, karmic or generational healing. I have personally found that allowing the client to verbally release old thought forms is beneficial during the session. All of these methods can also be used for self-healing by the practitioner.

There are four levels of Karuna Reiki® training. The first two levels of training will certify one to be a practitioner. The second two levels of training will certify one to be a teacher. Anyone who has taken three levels of Usui Reiki is eligible for the training. When one has completed their studies, they are registered with the International Center for Reiki Training.

My hope is that many practitioners will discover this compassionate method of assisting humankind in healing. I would like to close with one of Mother Theresa’s statements: “There is a Light in this world … a healing spirit much stronger than any darkness we may encounter. We sometimes lose sight of this force… where there is suffering, too much pain.
